Born in May, at Kigezi district of Uganda, it was dedication, hard work and intelligence which rose Professor Gaddi Ngirane-Katashaya to be one of the distinguished professors in history our history.
Gaddi Ngirane-Katashaya is currently a Professor of Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering and Management in the Department of Civil Engineering, Makerere University, Kampala Uganda. He is also a Visiting Professor on Extended Sabbatical at Vaal University of Technology, Vanderbijlpark, South Africa in the Department of Civil Engineering and Building.
Prof. Ngirane-Katashaya, has over 37 year’s mix of professional, academic, and research experience/qualifications relevant to the engineering, management, and administrative functions in the water sector and the integrated environmental acquired in UK, Nigeria, Australia, Northern Oman, Kenya, Botswana, South Africa, and Uganda while at Universities, in government departments, private companies/firms, consultancies, and research.
He studied at Kigezi High School and Kings College Budo in Uganda and subsequently joined University of Nairobi in 1969. He obtained a BSc(Hons) degree from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Meteorology (Dip.Met) to become a WMO Meteorologist Class-1. He then proceeded to Australia for a Postgraduate study in Engineering Hydrology/Groundwater Hydrology at the University of New South Wales. Subsequently he was seconded to the Hydromet Survey Project of Lakes Victoria, Kyoga, and Albert Basin (the forerunner of the current Nile Basin Initiative). Was attached in Australia to Snowy Mountain Engineering Corporation (SMEC) that was doing mathematical modelling of the Upper Nile Basin.

He worked for Stewart Scott Consulting Engineers in Botswana in 1991 and later joined the Water Affairs Department of Botswana as Senior Water Engineer (Advisor). His work included supervision of ongoing water projects, study of potential damsites (water supply, hydropower, flood mitigation), and flood simulation for compensation assessment.
In 1995 he started an Earth Sciences Department at the University of Venda. The courses covered were Hydrology, Geology, and Soil Science and Conservation. His research in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering and Management continued and in the period 1991 – 1999 was able to publish four conference papers and one journal paper. He returned to Uganda in late 1999.
He was, also, the Consumers Representative on the Grid Code Committee of the Uganda ERA (Electricity Regulatory Authority) 2002 – 2009.
